ASF Fellowship - Vesterheim Study Visit 2024 - Collections Visit
In November of 2024, I visited the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, for a few days to study the bowls in their collection. I also visited the Vesterheim’s library to gather references to pole lathe bowl turning in Norway, which I wrote about what I learned in a separate blog entry.

ASF Fellowship - Vesterheim Study Visit 2024 - Library Visit
In November of 2024, I visited the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, for a few days to study old bowls in their collection, as well as search for references to early bowl turning and drinking traditions in Nordic countries. The focus of this post is to highlight some of the information I learned from the literature that I had access to in the Vesterheim’s library.

Haverford College Honorary Spoon
In January of 2024, I delivered a unique commission: a large decorated spoon to be presented to Charley Beever, the outgoing board chair of Haverford College. This honorary spoon serves as a nod to a lost Haverfordian tradition that began in 1873 and faded away sometime in the mid 20th century. Originally, each incoming class of Fords was entrusted with a large wooden spoon, which they would later vote to award to the student they most admired upon graduation, granting that student the coveted title of “Spoon Man.”

ASF Fellowship - Skill Development Week 2
In February of 2024 I completed week two of pole lathe skill development sessions with Jarrod Dahl at the Woodspirit School of Traditional Craft. We focused on locking lidded boxes, end grain cup turning, turning with projections, and forging end grain tools. This project is funded by The American Scandinavian Foundation through an Artist Fellowship.
